During
the late seventies, The Llanelli Stage Band was in full flow;
under the musical direction of Robert Marks, a graduate of
the Welsh College of Music and Drama, and is now a peripatetic
music teacher in the Carmarthenshire schools.
Also
in the original Llanelli Stage band was trumpet player Derek
Lawton, a close friend of Robert. Derek plays regularly in ‘Unique’,
a 4-piece cabaret band. After hearing ‘Unique’ perform, Robert
suggested that it would be excellent to augment the ‘Unique’ vocalists
with a 20 piece big band – Llanelli Stage band 2002 in fact! – it
was decided to call this new line-up “Nexus” which means ‘to
connect’ because the musicians in this new line up are from
all over Wales, and are a mixture of professional and semi-professional
musicians.
The
results are stunning – Nexus can go from knocking you backwards
with it’s power and excitement, to creating a feeling of
tranquility whilst playing a beautiful ballad.
‘Nexus’ has
been formed to entertain audiences with a variety of music
from Ella Fitzgerald to Shania Twain, and Frank Sinatra to
Robbie Williams – something for everyone is the main message.
There is no heavy jazz, and no Glen Miller; Nexus is focused
on the more popular numbers that have a real modern feel.
